The Friends of the Foundation committee (FOFz) was formed in 2011 and is the fundraising arm of the Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation. It is an active, enthusiastic, committed group of about 20 volunteers. Since 2012, we have raised in excess of $175,000 for the Foundation. Wines in the Vines – November 2017

The weather was perfect for third annual Wines in the Vines event at Norton Estate on Sunday, 12 November.

Guests were treated to a complimentary glass of wine, delicious shared platters and entertainment by local musicians Geoff Woodward, Peter Daffy and Peter Miller under umbrellas on the lawn area. Many guests took advantage of a bus service to the event provided by Shauna Heard.

Generous hosts, Chris and Sam Spence donated some unique and limited edition wines for auction and we sincerely thank them for their ongoing support.

Melbourne Cup Luncheon – November 2017

This year the FOFz joined forces with Quota International Wimmera to host a special Melbourne Cup Day luncheon at the Westside Tabaret.

Eighty guests enjoyed a light luncheon and drinks, with raffles and sweeps running throughout the day. Prizes were presented for lady of the day, hat of the day, gentleman of the day and tie of the day. We thank our fellow FOFz and local businesswoman Robyn Anders for co-ordinating this part of the day.

Golden Duck Dinner – October 2017

Our second annual Golden DUCK Dinner was held as part of the launch the Foundation's 5th Great Wimmera River Duck Race. Guests had a riDUCKulously good time at the DUCK’s Nuts Restaurant where they were treated to a fabulous three-course dinner showcasing seasonal and local produce, canape and DUCK drink on arrival and DUCK shooter with dessert. This exclusive gala charity event was very proDUCKtive, raising almost $4,000 for the Foundation.

LAUNCH OF THE GREAT WIMMERA RIVER DUCK RACE - OCT 2017

In keeping with our tradition, feathers were flying and yellow was the colour of the day for the launch of the Great Wimmera River DUCK Race at Café Jas.
VIPs including Emma Kealy MP, Member for Lowan, Cr Pam Clarke, Mayor of the Horsham Rural City Council and launch sponsors Sharron Keating from Café Jas and Graeme Eldridge from Axis Employment DUCKed in for the launch.
A special DUCK colouring competition sponsored by Café Jas was announced too.

VICTORIA AND ABDUL MOVIE NIGHT - SEPTEMBER 2017

Our Victoria and Abdul Movie Night was another sell-out event. Guests were treated to finger food and drinks in the Legacy building before making their way to the cinema with their lolly bag for a special screening of this extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of this Queen Victoria’s remarkable rule.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who donated delicious food and beverages and our amazing FOFz and other volunteers who helped out on the night. Most importantly, we thank our loyal supporters who attended the event.

"Dine Deep" at Seppelts

“Dine Deep” at Seppelts on Saturday, 19 August 2017, was another successful Friends of the Foundation event. Our 36 guests travelled by bus to Seppelts Winery in Great Western, where they were treated to cheese platters and wine on arrival, followed by a sumptuous two course dinner, tour of the drives and wine tasting.

Long Lunch in Port Fairy 2017

LOOOOONG LUNCH IN PORT FAIRY – JUNE 2017

On Sunday, 18 June 2017, the Friends of the foundation hosted a sensational loooong lunch at Conlan’s Wine Store in Port Fairy. This was the third looooong lunch hosted by the FOFz and once again it didn’t disappoint. It was certainly a day to remember for our guests who were treated to delicious four course lunch selected and prepared by award winning master chef Matt Dempsey and his professional team. There was also free time to explore the beautiful historic coastal town and make some new friends along the way.

We sincerely thank Conlan’s Wine Store, Baa3400, Drew Heard bus service, Peach’s Fruit Market, Wheat Milk Sugar and our 44 guests who all contributed to the success of this event.

COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL BUSKERS COMPETITION - MARCH 2017

Thirteen year old Maddie is a shining example of "Give Where You Live". Maddie passes a bucket around during the buskers competition each year at the plaza collecting donations for the Foundation.

This year, Maddie collected $195.50. Maddie is pictured on the left with Georgie.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST MOVIE NIGHT – MARCH 2017

The FOFz are well known for their movie nights and Beauty and the Beast was no exception. Great food, great company and a great movie was the way people described this event where 61 guests enjoyed nibbles and drinks in Legacy Hall before taking their individual pack of chocolates and heading into the cinema next door for the American musical romantic fantasy version of the Walt Disney classic.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who made this event possible, especially those who purchased a ticket and came along on the night, Horsham Centre Cinemas, Legacy, Sone of Grace Wines, Horsham East Rotary Club and our amazing FOFz and FOFettes who donated food and helped out on the night.

The Great Wimmera River Duck Race November 2016

On Saturday, 26 November 2016, after weeks of intensive training, almost 2,000 ducks took to the water for the 4th Annual Great Wimmera River Duck Race. 
Our race caller, Nims from 3WM/MixxFM once again did a fine job as he punned his way through the commentary whilst the Natimuk Ski Club managed the on water logistics with ease and precision. 
Prior to the race, the winner of the Baby Ducks competition was announced with the ducklings officially named Quackle and Pop.  Thanks to Rod Farrar, Paladin Risk Management, Number 1 ticket holder, Café Jas and Axis Employment for sponsoring the baby duck competition and Hillross Horsham for sponsoring the four lucky duck prizes. 
The Horsham International Restaurant’s duck mobile was also on hand, the crowd cheered from the banks and a drone captured the race from above. 
Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket, volunteered, sponsored or attended on the day.  It was a quacker of a FUNdraising event for the Foundation.

Wines in the Vines (Norton Estate Winery) November 2016

On 20 November 2016, the Friends of the Foundation held a lazy Sunday afternoon at the beautiful Norton Estate Winery at Lower Norton. 
Over 60 guests were treated to a complimentary glass of wine, delicious cheese platters and entertainment by local musician Dave McMaster under umbrellas on the lawn area, with many guests taking advantage of a bus service to and from Horsham provided by Shauna Heard Bus Services.

Generous hosts, Chris and Sam Spence donated some unique and limited edition wines for auction.  This is the second time Norton Estate have hosted this event and we sincerely thank them for their hospitality.

SHIRAZ 'N'SNAGS OCTOBER 2016

The windy weather was no deterrent to the crowds who enjoyed The Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation Friends of the Foundation's third Shiraz ‘n Snags lazy Sunday afternoon. Following the success of the previous events at this iconic location, it had a strong focus on local produce. The unique location of The Old Mill provided a lovely backdrop for the occasion.

What a great local combination - Don McRae’s Son of Grace Wines, delicious locally made sausages from Your Regional Butcher at Plaza Meats, as well as tastings and sales from Grampians Olive Co and Farmgirl Produce.

This event is the brain child of Don McRae, Director of Clinical Services at WHCG by day, and a wine maker by night! He also brewed his own hand crafted pale ale especially for the event.

Dave McMaster (Solo Dave) provided music on the day and guests revelled in the lucky wine dip of Don's unlabelled wines for $5 a bottle. This is now a regular event in the FOFz calendar!

THE INAUGURAL GOLDEN DUCK DINNER OCTOBER 2016

The inaugural GOLDEN DUCK DINNER was held as part of the launch the Foundation's 4th Great Wimmera Duck Race. The theme was all things golden and ducky. This exclusive gala charity event (with duck on the menu of course) for 78 guests included an auction and raffle and was our major fundraiser for the year. There were a number of "lucky duck" prizes, several raffles for prizes that have a food or duck focus (duck eggs, duck beer, gourmet recipe books) plus an auction of "quacking" prizes  including the #2 duck ticket for the race, dining and accommodation vouchers, gold jewellery.

The GOLDEN DUCK DINNER was a new event which was very proDUCKtive, raising $8041.50!

Feathers were flying, yellow was the colour of the day, quirky vehicles and extremely large ducks and baby twin ducks were again part of the launch at Cafe Jas.
VIP's "flew" in and ruffled a few feathers including Emma Kealy MP, member for Lowan, with son Harvey and Councillor Sue Exell representing the Mayor. The Duck  Mobile from The Horsham International Hotel arrived as did last year's big ducks Sticky Beak and Quackinator with their as yet unnamed baby twins (sponsored by Axis Employment and Cafe Jas) complete with their own personal Duck Security Team
Cafe Jas had a special offer on the day Duckaccinos with a Duck Ticket for customers. It was a quacker of a launch.

BRIDGET JONES'S BABY MOVIE NIGHT – SEPTEMBER 2016

Tickets sold out almost immediately to this popular release. The 72 guests enjoyed drinks and nibbles in the Legacy Hall before settling down in the Horsham Cinemas with their individual pack of gourmet chocolates (and little baby feet lollies).

The hilarious story of Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) being over 40 and single again then falling pregnant but not knowing quite who the father is was well received by everyone.

She's done it again!!

13 year old Maddison collected money for the Foundation at the Horsham Country Music Festival buskers competition at Horsham Plaza. She collected $270.90!

The setting was fabulous, the wine excellent and the weather was perfect for the inaugural Wines in the Vines event at the beautiful Norton Estate Winery.

About 70 guests attended the lazy Sunday afternoon event from 2-4pm, many taking advantage of the bus that provided transport from Horsham and back.

Guests enjoyed a complimentary glass of wine on arrival and grazed on a spread of beautiful cheeses, dips, biscuits and grapes as they socialised under the umbrellas on the lawn.

Chris and Sam Spence donated some of their wines as raffle prizes as well as offering 15 lots of special and unique wines to auction.

The Friends of the Foundation would like to thank Chris and Sam for their hospitality and generosity in hosting this event which we hope will become an annual event on the FOFz calendar.

The Great Wimmera River Duck Race November 2015

Over 1600 highly trained ducks took like a duck to water in the 3rd Annual Great Wimmera Duck Race in near perfect conditions. Again, it was a hotly contested race that was one by a beak in a photo finish.

Our race caller, Nims, from 3WM/MixxFM punned his way through the commentary and earned his feathers as a fledgling duck race caller.

Prior to the race, the winner of the Name the Big Ducks competition was announced and the ducks were duly officially named STICKYBEAK and QUACKINATOR. Thanks to Cafe Jas and Axis Employment for sponsoring the big ducks and the competition.

Natimuk Lake Ski Club in conjunction with Buoyage Systems managed the on water logistics and a special visit by a drone captured the race from above.
Hillross Horsham sponsored the 4 lucky duck prizes.

SHIRAZ 'N' SNAGS OCTOBER 2015

About 80 people enjoyed the second Shiraz ‘n Snags lazy Sunday afternoon in glorious sunshine on October 11 from 12noon to 2pm at the Old Mill.

Following the success of last year’s event at this iconic location, the event focussed on local produce with Don McRae’s Son of Grace Wines, delicious locally made sausages from Your Regional Butcher at Plaza Meats, locally made bread from Brumby's Bakery and tastings of Grampians Olive Co, makers of Toscana Olives and Farmgirl Produce. Don also made a special brew of hand crafted sparkling ale for this event. The wine lucky dip revealed some of Don's award winning wines among the cleanskins.

Thanks also to Mario Plazzer, Liz McRae, Peaches Fruit Mart, Horsham Rural City Council, Spotlight, the Telstra Business Centre and our assistant FOFz - Chris, Ken, Robert and  Kevin.

Also of note were The Mayor's very ducky speech, the presence of Emma Kealy MP, member for Lowan, fashionably dressed in yellow, the vehicle from The Horsham International decorated as our mobile "Duck Bill"Board and our 2 large (as yet unnamed) inflatable ducks (sponsored by Axis Employment and Cafe Jas).

The event was all it was quacked up to be - no dead ducks or sitting ducks were visible!

THE DRESSMAKER - HORSHAM'S RED CARPET
SPECIAL PREVIEW EVENT October 2015

The Friends of the Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation in conjunction with the Wimmera Mail Times hosted the special red carpet preview screening of The Dressmaker on October 22nd for 300 people. The clothes were glamorous, many people dressing in the 50's theme and the atmosphere was electric.

Drinks and nibbles were served prior to the screening with a strong focus on "local and regional" produce. Guests included our Wimmera stars - the many local people who appear as extras in the movie. Also present were Rosalie Ham, author, Sue Maslin, producer, Jill Bilcock, editor and Charlotte Seymour, extras casting director.

At the theatre, Rosalie and Sue held a Q & A session before the movie. The excitement of and for our local stars and their families was palpable - especially in the footy and wedding scenes. At the end, everyone applauded a wonderful movie featuring our own region and people.

LAST CAB TO DARWIN MOVIE NIGHT – August 2015

The sell out event was enjoyed by 72 guests who savoured Aussie style refreshments in the Legacy Hall before settling down in the Horsham Cinemas with their packet of mixed lollies.

The newly released movie was well received by the guests. Starring Michael Caton and Jacki Weaver, the movie is based on the true story of taxi driver Rex Bell who was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer in the early 1990s. When he discovers he doesn't have long to live, he decides to drive through the heart of the country from Broken Hill to Darwin, where new euthanasia laws could enable him to control his fate.

Jeff Woodward Lazy Sunday Afternoon at the Bull and Mouth April 2015

Ninety plus people enjoyed a Lazy Sunday afternoon at the Bull and Mouth Hotel featuring guitarist and singer Jeff Woodward. Woodward has moved back to the Wimmera after several years away, playing in bands and performing solo in a semi-professional capacity for more than 25 years. His music CV is outstanding.

A big thank you to Jeff who donated his time to play for this event. He performed a sensational solo acoustic and electric set including well-known blues and classic rock covers plus a few original tunes.

Country and Western Festival – Maddison March 2015

What a champion!! 12 year old Maddison collected money for the Foundation at the Horsham Country Music Festival buskers competition at Horsham Plaza. She collected $287.40! Well done Maddison, fantastic effort and looking great. Another shining example of "Give Where You Live".

100 Miles Tapas Event

100 Mile Tapas Event

The Friends of the Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation held the inaugural 100 Mile Tapas in conjunction with Michael Unwin Wines on March 1. The event featured 7 courses of tapas style courses with matched wines.

Michael introduced each course and explained about the wines. He provided an animated dialogue that was very entertaining. The tapas styled courses were prepared by Michael Unwin Wines longtime associate Sara Kittelty. Ms Kittelty and her husband Jon Young from Kittelty’s work closely with Michael Unwin Wines and have previously served cuisine-themed events in the Pyrenees region. This was their first visit to Horsham.

The event was a sell out, the weather was sensational, the venue at the river was perfect and the WHCG Friends of the Foundation hope this may become an annual event to celebrate the arrival of autumn.

Toscana Olives Christmas Offer 2014

Our friends and great supporters at Toscana Olives generously offered to donate 20% of sales from their Christmas offer to the Foundation. This was a great opportunity for people to buy local, support our local producers and Give Where You Live and was very well supported. Our thanks to Greg and the team at Toscana Olives.

WHCGF - Duck Race 2014

The Great Wimmera River Duck Race November 29 2014

Hundreds of people DUCKED down to enjoy the perfect duck racing weather for the second annual Great Wimmera River Duck Race at the Kannamaroo Festival which raised just over $8000 for the Foundation.

There was a flurry of sales for last minute lucky duck tickets. Feathers were flying on the Friday night at Kannamarooo and down at the river just prior to the race with people fighting feather and beak to buy a thoroughbred racing duck.

This year the Foundation DUCK Fleet more than doubled in number so competition was extremely fierce as 2,047 DUCKs jostled each other, trying to claim victory as the first DUCK to reach the finish line. The Great Wimmera Duck race winner won by a beak in the highly competitive race on a very wet track.

DUCK race callers ABC radio presenter Dan Daffy DUCK Glover ably assisted by ABC Rural Reporter Brett Daisy DUCK Worthington quacked the crowd up with their race commentary.

The Natimuk Ski Club held water skiing demonstrations before and after the DUCK race and managed the on water logistics and duck retrieval.

Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket. This is a very proDUCKtive project for the Foundation, and all duck quotes and quips have been put away with the ducks till next year.
WHCGF - Shiraz n Snags Day

Gold Medal Shiraz 'n Snags – October 2014

The Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation Friends of the Foundation held a very successful Gold Medal Shiraz ‘n Snags fundraising event on October 19 at the Old Mill in Horsham. The event was a sellout with over 60 people attending and raised over $1880 for the WHCG Foundation. Thanks to our sponsors and supporters: Son of Grace Wines, Don McRae, Plaza Meats, Waack’s Bakery and Toscana Olive Oil (all gold medal winners), as well as Casey’s Pantry, the entire McRae family for their very popular craft beer, homemade chutney and musical entertainment. Also a big shout out to our BBQ gurus Chris and Bryce!

WHCGF - The Hundred Mile Journey Movie Night

THE HUNDRED MILE JOURNEY MOVIE NIGHT - August 2014

About 80 Guests enjoyed Indian finger food and French wine with just a hint of Indian incense prior to the movie. Many guests spiced it up and came dressed with a touch of Indian. Best dressed guest was Justin Rethus who won a bottle of French champagne.

Fofz co-ordinator Allison Roberts said "many guests went to a lot of effort to dress in the theme which was lots of fun. We put a diamante bindi on the forehead of every guest to add to the atmosphere".

WHCGF - Foundation Football Fundraising Fortnight

FOUNDATION FLOURO FOOTBALL FUNDRAISING FORTNIGHT (FFFFf) - July 2014

The second year of the FFFF went fluoro. As well as the involvement of many football and netball clubs, most local schools become involved by holding a gold coin donation football and/or fluoro colours free dress day in support of the Foundation. McDonald’s Family Restaurant in Horsham also supported by FFFF this year. They decorated the store and staff wore brightly-coloured clothes throughout the duration of FFFFF.

We thank everyone who supported this event in any way and helped us to raise approximately $4000.

WHCGF - Grace of Monaco

GRACE OF MONACO MOVIE NIGHT - June 2014

The Grace of Monaco movie night was a great success with more than 140 people attending. We raised an amazing $2938 profit from the evening.

Many guests went to the effort of dressing up for the evening in the "Grace era" that added to the atmosphere.
WHCGF - Looooong Lunch 2014

LOOOOONG LUNCH AT ECHUCA - March 2014

Following the amazing success of the 2013 Looooong Lunch to Peter Doyle’s at the Quay, Sydney, the Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation Friends of the Foundation organised a sensational looooong lunch at Oscar W’s in Echuca on March 23.

Guests lingered over a delicious 4 course Chef’s Selection menu with beautiful wines, and also enjoyed some free time in the afternoon exploring the historic port area or enjoying a paddle steamer ride on the Murray. Oscar W’s was renowned for its award winning menus that celebrated local, regional, national and international food complemented by an extensive wine list, so we knew this would be a day to remember.

The Great Wimmera Duck Race

The Great Wimmera Duck Race – November 2013

The FDF (Foundation Duck Fleet) landed in Horsham in October 2013 - all ducks successfully passed their medical examinations by the local "quack". They were cleared by the HDADA (Horsham Duck Anti-Doping Authority) and went into intensive training as they prepared to race in the raging torrents of the Wimmera River in November. Competition was fierce as around 1,000 ducks jostled against each other, in the hope of claiming victory as the first duck to cross the finish line. The Race was held on the banks of the Wimmera River near the Soundshell as part of the Kanamaroo Festival. The Natimuk Ski Club provided some great water skiing demonstrations before and after the duck race. Watch out for next year’s event - there could be even more ducks landing in Horsham to add to the competition!

Popular Masterchef 2012 contestant Amina Elshafei ran a series of Master Classes over three days at Axis Worx to showcase her unique style of food that is influenced by her Middle Eastern and Asian background. There was a strong focus on local produce – olive oil, lentils and chick peas, her favourite ingredients. Amina also cooked with other local products such as eggs, locally preserved lemons, quinces and peaches, pink salt, verjuice and honey and created delicious three course menus which the participants shared.

Amina had endeared herself to Horsham guests at her surprise appearance at the Foundation’s previous fundraising event at Peter Doyle @ The Quay Restaurant in Sydney.

Foundation Football Fundraising Fortnight

FOUNDATION FOOTBALL FUNDRAISING FORTNIGHT - July 2013

Passionate Collingwood football supporter and Friend of the Foundation, Debbie Simpson, inspired the concept of a Foundation Football Fundraising Fortnight (FFFF) to be held over the last two weekends in July 2013. The Wimmera Football League and District Football League teams were invited to fundraise at home matches during the fortnight with all proceeds going to the Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation. There was great commitment from clubs to support this concept which could become an annual event.

Foundation Chairman Don Johns OAM supported the concept as football players are cared for at the Wimmera Health Care Group campuses at Dimboola and Horsham when injured. Money raised from this fundraising fortnight will go towards the WHCG Foundation’s target of raising $1 million in capital by 2014.

Icecream Masterclass

Those who attended learned the techniques required to make several types of delicious icecream. They included Vanilla, an awesome Chocolate and even a Margarita Cocktail Ice Cream. People were able to taste them all and take home recipes and samples. Good companionship and a great cause were the messages of the day.

All funds raised from events go towards the WHCG Foundation’s target of raising $1million in capital by 2014.

Sydney Loooooong Lunch

Sydney "Loooooong" Lunch – Peter Doyle @ The Quay Restaurant in February 2013

Fifty people braved a very early start to travel to Sydney to enjoy a "loooooong" Lunch at Peter Doyle @ The Quay, a fundraiser for Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation.

Peter Doyle, Foundation Patron, and his wife Fiona hosted the lunch and chatted with guests as they enjoyed the breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour. Guests were greeted with French champagne and canapés which included fresh figs in prosciutto with blue cheese, smoked salmon blinis and a mini serve of Peter’s signature dish, fish and chips. Guests were also delighted with the surprise appearance by Amina Elshafei who was a contestant in Master Chef 2012. Amina enjoyed talking with everyone and sharing her experiences and food interests over the lunch. Organisers Allison Roberts and Denise Leembruggen thanked Chris Buwalda at Harvey World Travel for a well organised trip.

This was a lovely way to celebrate local produce and a great way to raise funds for the Foundation at the same time.

Kath n Kim devotees attended a fundraising film night at the Horsham Centre Cinemas to celebrate its release. For their debut feature film, Kath & Kimderella were escaping their Australian "setting" for a fairytale European holiday. Attendees were encouraged to come dressed as a character from the film.
